North Caroline has a blend of fresh and saltwater fishing options, with many options available to both residents and non-residents.

One exception to the broad fishing license availability is the subsistence category. Available to residents who receive some varieties of state and federal aid, the subsistence license waiver provides access to inland fishing, including fishing in trout waters. This license is designed to allow residents access to fishing as a past time and as an alternative source of food even if they could not otherwise afford it.

Other discounts may be available for youth, seniors, individuals with certain disabilities, and military service members and veterans.

It’s also important for anglers to study up on the different fishing regions in North Carolina. Depending on the water temperature, type of fish, and area you choose to fish, you may be subject to different restrictions.

Fish identification is also especially important in North Carolina since bag limits vary quite a bit, and trout are especially controlled under North Carolina’s regulations.

More than two dozen different varieties of game fish call North Carolina home. Experienced anglers will find plenty of challenge in the rarer and pickier varieties, while even inexperienced anglers are sure to enjoy pulling their first fish out of North Carolina’s lakes and rivers.
