New York is known for more than just the city of the same name. Its long landscapes are some of the most beautiful on the eastern coastline, and the fishing lives up to the state’s reputation for beauty and wildlife.

New York has a fairly straightforward licensing system, with a single day, 7 day, and annual licenses available to residents and non-residents alike. The state offers discounts to active service military, veterans rated 40% disabled or above, the legally blind, and non-resident college students.

The state offers several free fishing days each year. While the need for a license is waived during this period, all other fishing regulations and standards remain in place.

But, New York also offers free fishing clinics intermittently throughout the year. Free fishing clinics are location-specific, not statewide. But, they are also often instructional, teaching better fishing techniques, methods to protect the health of individual fish and the fishery, and fish identification.

Lifetime licenses are available for New York residents. Unlike most states, residents are eligible for lifetime licenses at any time, not only when they are within specific age ranges.

Since New York borders several other states, and Ontario, Canada, it’s important for anglers to make sure they know which side of the border they’re fishing on. Some states allow cross-border fishing on shared waters, but not all.
