New Mexico is a desert state, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t offer a surprising variety of fishing opportunities anyway.

New Mexico does not require licenses for an anglers age 11 or younger. The state offers Junior licenses for 12-17-year-old anglers. Adults are required to have a regular license until they reach age 65 when residents qualify for a discounted senior license.

Free licenses are available for New Mexico residents age 70 and above, but they are still required to carry the license.

Discounted licenses are also available to New Mexico residents who have documented disabilities of some types.

Gila trout can be harvested at specific locations through New Mexico. Although there is not an additional cost to harvest these fish, you do need to have the appropriate stamp on your license to help with management numbers.

Vendors in New Mexico may also impose a $1 vendor fee on all state licenses they issue.

Habitat stamps are not required for anglers 17 years old and younger, but it required for almost all other anglers. Habitat stamps go directly to support habitat maintenance and recover efforts through the state.

Like most states, the money generated from fishing and other state wildlife licenses helps pay for the maintenance, conservation, research, and staffing required to ensure healthy natural habitats for the future generation of people and wildlife.
