Jersey Shore wasn’t a fishing show, but that doesn’t mean that the Garden State is a good place for anglers.

New Jersey does not require fishing licenses for anglers under the age of 16, and discounts licenses for residents over the age of 64.

It’s also a state with a surprising number of exceptions of discounts. Depending on your situation you may qualify for a discount for disabled persons, military service members and veterans, families, or under the ‘buddy license’ system.

Most of these discounts require that you have lived in New Jersey for a set period before getting the license, excepting those for military service members.

There are also some special permits available for rehabilitative, educational, and other special institutions that would allow them to bring fishers out without licensing each participant.

New Jersey is also a little different in that anglers are required to wear their fishing licenses in a visible location, not simply to present them when asked.

You must reside in New Jersey for at least six months prior to purchasing your fishing license to qualify for resident fishing licenses.

Farmers and immediate family members who live on the farm may fish their own land without a license in New Jersey. However, they are still required to abide by all fishing regulations aside from license requirements.
