Minnesota has a carefully managed fishing environment that helps ensure more anglers have the kind of enjoyable and productive trip we all hope for.

One of the first big differences between Minnesota and many other states is that it’s very important to stay on top of the state’s fishing seasons. Fish aren’t always in season, and it’s important to follow standards for catch and release if you accidentally hook a fish outside of its season.

Check Minnesota’s fishing seasons, here.

Like in any state, anglers are responsible for being aware of the state’s regulations and fish seasons for themselves.

Sturgeon Trout and Walleye fish each require an additional stamp in Minnesota, in addition to other seasonal restrictions. Minnesota also offers a wide variety of licenses and license levels, including recreational fishing, conservation fishing, netting and spearing licenses, and various tournament licenses.

The Minnesota fishing seasons reset on March 1st every year. It’s your responsibility to make sure you have a license for the valid year if you go fishing after March 1st.

All anglers age 16 through 89 are required to have a valid fishing license unless otherwise exempted due to disability, military service, or other considerations. If you do not need to carry a fishing license, you still need to carry valid ID and potentially other paperwork to validate your exemption.

Some combined couple and family licenses are also available to residents and non-residents in Minnesota.
