The Northeastern most state in the Union, known for lighthouses, lobsters, and sandy beaches, the state also offers thousands of lakes and rivers for an ideal combination of northerly fishing opportunities. If you want to fish the Atlantic Ocean or pull cold-water fish from the depths of a lake, there’s something here for you.

Maine allows both electronic copy and paper copies of their fishing licenses. Whether you use electronic versions or paper copies of your licenses, you are required to carry your license any time you’re fishing, along with matching ID.

You’re also required to have your license with you while transporting fish.

Maine offers a wide variety of trout fishing, one of the major attractions in this state. Especially since, unlike many other states, Maine includes trout fish in their main fishing licenses without the need for an additional stamp or permit.

Maine requires that all anglers 16 years or older have a license to fish inland or harvest from inland waters.

You’ll need a separate registration if you intend to go saltwater fishing in Maine’s coastal waters without a freshwater fishing license. Your primary Maine freshwater license also covers saltwater fishing, but you can go saltwater fishing without one as long as you register.

Maine’s Native Tribes members are also eligible for lifetime fishing licenses after meeting a few requirements. Military service members, seniors, and individuals with disabilities are also potentially eligible for discounted rates on fishing licenses.
