Illinois offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities for lake fishing, river fishing, and more.

In the state of Illinois, all anglers 16 years old or older are required to have their own fishing license. Additional stamps are required for trout fishing and salmon fishing out of Lake Michigan for all anglers.

Illinois operates under an angler’s code of ethics. It can be found in full on their website, but some items include things like not littering, understanding lake-specific regulations, and taking care of the environment, particularly spawning grounds.

Licenses aren’t required for active duty Illinois residents. Disabled individuals may also be eligible for waiving licensing fees and requirements. Veterans are also eligible for discounts on licensing fees.

Some lifetime and commercial fishing licenses are also available in Illinois, to residents and non-residents alike.

Illinois also offers an extensive conservation angling program. If you’re looking to get involved in angling, but are more interested in environmental protection than bringing fish home as food, conservation angling may be for you. Ridding the state of invasive species is also, at times, considered a form of conservation angling.

Ice fishing is available in appropriate weather, as are a wide variety of fishing competitions and classes. No matter what type of fishing you're interested in, Illinois has it.
